Construction Updates

We are revamping our space! Please see below for more information about our exciting new building project and what this means for our patients!

An exciting new chapter for Alger Pediatrics!

Since 1978, Alger Pediatrics has had the privilege of caring for generations of children and supporting families throughout our community. For nearly five decades, our mission has remained the same: providing exceptional pediatric care with compassion, dedication, and excellence.

Today, we are excited to begin a new chapter. As we build our new home in our same cherished location, we celebrate the legacy that brought us here and look ahead to an even brighter future for the children and families we serve.

Our new building is more than a sign of growth: it is an investment in future generations. Designed to meet the evolving needs of pediatric healthcare, this space will help us continue delivering the personalized, high-quality care that has defined Alger Pediatrics for nearly 50 years. While the building will be new, our values remain unchanged. We are committed to outstanding pediatric care, lasting relationships with families, and helping every child grow, thrive, and reach their full potential.

We are deeply grateful to our patients, families, physicians, staff, and community partners for their trust and support. As we build for the future, we honor our past. We look forward to caring for new generations while continuing our tradition of excellence in the Alger Heights community and beyond.

Here’s to the next chapter of Alger Pediatrics!

A brief history of Alger Pediatrics
(by Dr. Ron Hofman)

In 1978, Dr. Robert Bulten saw the Alger Heights neighborhood as a spot to deliver primary care pediatrics to all the children of our community. He made the decision to be a Medicaid provider as well. He rented a small part of our current building. With the addition of more partners, Dr. Douglas Daining in 1982 and Dr. Ronald Hofman in 1984, the practice expanded, and soon the whole building became the space we have grown to love. The name of the practice became Alger Pediatrics to reflect our neighborhood within the city of Grand Rapids.

In 1982, we developed a relationship with Baxter Community Center, extending volunteer care there to many who were uninsured, underinsured, or were Medicaid recipients in the Baxter neighborhood. For many years, Alger Pediatrics physicians also volunteered at Bethany Christian Services, seeing new refugees and babies brought into foster and adoptive placement.

In subsequent years, Alger Pediatrics expanded to six physicians, all functioning in tight quarters in a building never intended to be a medical practice. We adapted the building to make it work and have since added medical home providers including care managers, registered dietitians, and lactation consultants, all helping patients and families establish vital nutritional, medical, physical, and emotional support. In addition, Alger Pediatrics has played its part in the development and sustainability of Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital from its inception. We have been on staff at both Corewell-related hospitals (a.k.a. Blodgett and Butterworth) and what is now Trinity (formerly Saint Mary’s).

Our vision for the future!

Here is a sneak peek of what the new building will look like, inside and out!

Logistics - what does this mean for our patients?

Hours:

We will continue to see patients and operate at our normal business hours throughout the building project!

Parking:

Starting Tuesday June 16, we will have very limited parking at the office. We will have clearly marked handicap/accessible parking at the building. Please see the parking map below (or click HERE) for information about parking, and please see the construction fencing plan and patient entry map below (or click HERE). We ask that you arrive 10-15 minutes early to your scheduled appointments to allow adequate time for parking and travel to the office.

How can your children participate in the excitement?

We will have "windows" in the construction fencing surrounding the construction areas so families can safely watch the action!
